Description
  • The LIFE IN ARCHITECTURE Competition serves to promote good urban architecture and the interest of urban residents in the appearance of newly-built structures. The prizewinning buildings give a new quality to their surroundings and at the same time respect the historical and cultural values of a given place.
  • The competition is held within two ranges - Warsaw and nationwide. In Warsaw, it is organized every two years. The nationwide edition (the third one) was held between 1999 and 2000. The jury evaluated buildings created after 1989 in eight Polish cities. The buildings may be submitted for competition by their designers or investors. Awards in the categories of public buildings and multi- and single family houses are given by a professional jury and the inhabitants, who chose their Favorite from among the buildings submitted to the competition. The plebiscite is organized by "Gazeta Wyborcza". The authors of and investors in the winning buildings receive ARCHITEKTURA cups designed by Adam Myjak and, in the case of the Favorite, they are given an honorary memorial plate. The award ceremony is always accompanied by an exhibition of the works submitted.
Effect
  • Around 300 persons - architects, investors, representatives of the municipal office, the Polish Architects' Society, the Chamber of Architects and architecture students - participate in announcing the results of each Warsaw edition. 400 people took part in the nationwide award ceremony.
  • A presentation of the 10-year output of the LIFE IN ARCHITECTURE competition took place in May 2006 at the Warsaw Center for Contemporary Art in Ujazdowski Castle. Over the course of 10 years, around 1700 constructions were submitted for the competition.

The action's aim

  • Competition for the best buildings constructed over the last years in Poland is an excellent way to promote Polish architecture created in present times.
